Hailing from the Basque region of Spain, LA-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leroy Sanchez has come a long way both musically and physically.
As a young boy, Leroy knew he had a passion for music so he looked for ways to become more musically versed. Without any prior experience, he learned the craft of playing guitar and piano via YouTube.
Additionally, Leroy sought out opportunities to demonstrate his talents. Starting at the age of 14, he joined various television shows. However, publicity from these shows did not do enough for his career. Instead, his success emerged from a less traditional place.
Initially, the aspiring singer began recording videos of himself and his music group on YouTube, the same place he once drew his musical knowledge from. The rising popularity of these YouTube videos slowly began to pave the road to Leroy’s personal success. Local Spanish media from EITB (Radio Basque Television) to Antena 3, identified Leroy as a rising star.
Covering songs by artists like Beyonce, Adele, Alicia Keys, James Morrison, Usher, Chris Brown, and Kings of Leon, Leroy made a serious name for himself in the social media community as well. Fans began to reach out to Leroy directly with requests for specific covers.
Finally in 2010, famous music-producer Jim Jonsin’s interest was piqued after viewing one of Leroy’s many YouTube videos. After several phone conversations, flights, and meetings, Jonsin (who has previously produced songs for Beyonce, Usher, Lil Wayne, T.I., and Kelly Rowland) decided to sign Leroy to Rebel Rock/Interscope Records.
Realizing he had already exhausted all the opportunities he had available in his hometown, Leroy moved to the United States and began to make significant strides in his career. In 2011, he joined American Idol as a contestant and quickly stole the hearts of the audience.
He continued on by working on covers as well as new music and in 2015 released his first single titled “Little Dancer” accompanied by a music video on his new YouTube VEVO account. No longer was he an amateur YouTube artist.
Leroy’s initial single was followed by songs like “By My Side” and his most recent cover of Gnarles Barkley’s “Crazy” with Madilyn Bailey.
Today, Leroy has amassed a total of 2,458,052 subscribers on his YouTube channel with a total of 260,763,865 views. On his first headlining tour Man Of The Year, Leroy will be making stops in cities across the U.S., Europe, and Canada.
If you’d like to catch him before he makes his way overseas, it’s not too late. Leroy will be playing at the Troubadour this Saturday February 4th, 8 PM.
