Giorgia “Giolì” Lipari is a 21-year-old Italian producer who shot straight to the top of the charts when she began two years ago. Assia Nania is 25 years old, also Italian, and is a singer, artist, and photographer who’s just breaking into the spotlight. Together, they make one of the world’s most unstoppable electro-pop duos, Giolì & Assia, ready to take the music industry by storm with their highly anticipated album ISTANTANEE.
After a partnership of collaboration and camaraderie for the past two years, the duo’s decision to join forces hardly seems a surprise. We had a chance to speak with Giolì & Assia about their upcoming album, day-to-day life, and aspirations for their new label.
Congratulations on your new album! Can you tell us a little bit about the process and inspiration behind it?
We decided to write and record the album at the beginning of 2017. Our goal was to produce tracks that could unify our different music influences, something between house and pop music. We started with “Stay Closer”, then “Paradise to Share” and “How Can I?” We chose a Polaroid snapshot as cover for the first tracks, so we thought we’d call the album “istantanee,” the Italian word for a Polaroid.
ISTANTANEE will contain 12 tracks and each track will tell a different story, just as a Polaroid immortalizes a particular moment of life.
Congratulations also on your label Diesis Records. Why did you make your own label? What are your hopes for it?
We decided to found our own label very early on, so it could grow and mature with us, and maybe one day could become a real and competitive brand. Diesis reflects our music and the artists we have as part of our roster: independent music that doesn’t want to get drawn into standard guidelines.
We’re partnering with Believe Distribution Services for this project, and with their international support and know-how we’re sure we’ll have great success and satisfaction with the album and singles ahead.
How did you two meet and decide to join forces to become a duo?
We met three years ago, chatting on Facebook. We noticed from the beginning that we were really close, our passions were similar and our dreams were too; the love for the music and travel, our life goals. We started working together a few months later, but our project as a duo is brand new, it was conceived just four months ago.
Giolì, your introduction was classical with the piano, and Assia, you started more in art direction. Would you say your different approaches to music production influences how you collaborate?
Yes, for sure. We are who we are now thanks to the things we worked on previously. The music we listened to, experiences we had, and our love for arts all impacted who we are to this day.
In just three years we discovered so many things about us that completely changed our approach to music production. Every time we are in the studio we create something new and different. However, we wouldn’t be here without those famous piano lessons.
Your sound is described as electro/indie pop. Would you say you have big artists that influence your production?
We love and listen to many different artists from different styles and genres. Indie, electro, pop, house, techno, so it’s difficult to say. However, our favorites are ODESZA, alt-J, Paul Kalkbrenner, The xx, Florence + the Machine, Lorde.
What do the two of you do when you’re not making music?
Since we are a couple, we are together even when are not making music. Recently, we met some new amazing guys in our city and have been spending lots of time with them, shooting new videos, taking photos, etc. We’ve also been going to the cinema, or just hanging around the in the city—the bad thing is that we always wake up late!
What’s in store for 2018?
Lot of things are happening in 2018. Besides the album being released in March, we are planning some great stuff for next summer. Let’s meet in Ibiza!
