Independence Day is rolling in awfully fast. And even though it falls on a Tuesday, it’s still important that we all put in our due diligence and celebrate over the weekend.
The best way to celebrate almost anything is by going to a show. If you’re from the Dallas area and enjoy bluegrass, instruments with strings, and a little bit of noise, then your Fourth of July may be nothing more than a day of recovery.
It’s hard to write about the upcoming weekend in Dallas without mentioning a few shows:
- Willie Nelson will be in town on Sunday, July 2nd, as part of the Outlaw Music Festival. The bill also includes Sheryl Crow, The Avett Brothers, and plenty more.
- Boston will be at the Starplex Pavilion, with Joan Jett as a guest, on Friday, June 30th.
There’s no question that those shows will be fun, but they’re not the true gems of Dallas’ Independence weekend. Those guys are the legends. They’re the ones that we all know. They’ve built a track record based on things that they probably cannot do anymore.
This is where the music kicks in. The strings are ringing. There’s a great big band on stage that’s starting to groove. Things are heating up.
Things are going to be especially hot when the music actually starts playing this weekend at Sundown at Granada.
The Vandoliers come into Dallas having recently been endorsed as one of “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know: May 2017” by Rolling Stone. They’re from Dallas, but they don’t entirely sound like it.
It’s hard to classify these guys as just a Country or Alt-Country rock band. There is an Americana and slight punk presence in their music that adds tempo and energy to a country baseline.
Regardless of their genre, however, you’re going to want to see them:

Then, when the weekend is over but the celebration is still in full swing, another great show to catch is the Travelin’ McCourys. More actually bluegrass as compared to The Vandoliers, these guys bring a slightly more traditional approach to the world of string instruments.

While neither of these bands have the reputation of someone like Willie Nelson, they are still terrific and on the rise. Make room on the stage, because these bands have a lot of unpacking to do, and a lot to offer.
