If you’re looking for some incredible banjo playing, look no further. Scott McDougall is taking everything about old-time folk rock and putting a bluesy set of ears on it. This young multi-instrumentalist has somehow had a lifetime of experiences since his 2010 release Our New Histories and you can hear it throughout every song.
THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. Listening to “The Struggler’s Medley” is like somehow putting enough pressure on three or four people to create one (who happens to bring all the instruments). Then you dig a little bit deeper and the man isn’t doing just one project at a time. Of course he’s not!
What about heavy folk rock? Yes please. One of McDougall’s side projects is called Tin Boat and it takes everything that you love about his folk and puts a deeper, darker magnifying glass above it. The vocals have a classic hard rock vibe, like a young Ozzy.
Lastly, even though he just released an album last year, it sounds as though he’s got another one in the works. Catch McDougall throughout the Pacific Northwest in 2017 (although, I’ll be hoping he makes his way to the other side of the country as soon as possible).
