VASSY should be no strange name to those familiar with electronic music. You may recognize her from her collaborations with huge names such as David Guetta, Showtek, Tiësto, Afrojack, and Kshmr; her own hit solo singles; or from her nonprofit work benefiting people in the penitentiary system.
As an Australian with a Greek cultural background, her sound is one-of-a-kind, shaped by her family and experiences. She’s performed Tomorrowland, Ultra Miami, and Electric Zoo sets, and is making herself known as a force to be reckoned with in the electronic world.
And fans new and old are in luck. VASSY just has released yet another infectious single alongside Lodato titled “Doomsday.”
We had a minute to talk to VASSY about the work behind her new single, her background, and what’s in store for the future.
Congratulations on your new single! Can you tell me a little bit about the process of making it as well as the inspiration behind it?
I’ve always wanted to work with Lodato. He is very talented, and we came up with the concept together, which we felt people could really relate to, as it talks about issues people go through. The process was really natural as we wrote it, recorded the vocals, and started to flesh out the production around it very quickly.
Both of your parents are from Greece, and you grew up in Australia, but you are now based in North America. How would you say your sound has been influenced by your background?
I’m not sure, but the Greek culture is a big part of who I am. I’m not sure if it influences my music, but there are lots of things that come up every day that I think come from my foundation of growing up in Australia and from my parents.
What sparked your interest in making music? Was there an “aha” moment where you realized it was your passion?
I’ve always known I wanted to do music from a young age. It’s been the driving force in my life and sometimes I feel like it chose me, as I did not grow up around it!
It perplexes me still to this day where the idea came from to be an artist, but I am happy it happened!
Can you tell me a little bit about your nonprofit charity work on working with prisoners in hip-hop workshops?
I was invited to attend detention centers, and I conducted motivational type workshops where I talked about music struggles in life. I utilized hip-hop as a way to connect with them and as a way for them to let their guard down and open up and talk about themselves and their passions in life. It was very moving to hear their stories of how they got there.
You’ve worked with huge artists such as David Guetta, Showtek, Tiesto, Afrojack, Kshmr, and more. What has the journey been like? Do you have anyone you’re dying to make music with?
I feel blessed! It has been an amazing journey so far, and one I did not anticipate! As a result of all these collaborations I have been embraced by the dance/EDM community.
There are so many people I want to work with, like Calvin Harris has always been one of them. I was going back and forth with Avicii on something too… 🙁 There are so many talented people in the industry and I look forward to all the cool new music ahead!
How do you discover new music? Is there anyone you can’t stop listening to?
Everywhere, on all digital platforms, people’s playlists, DJ friends of mine through what they are playing in their mix shows, what my friends are releasing and who they are listening to, and so on… It’s hard to stay on top of it all!
What’s in store for the next year?
Lots of new music to share with my amazing fans who I love and want to keep giving them new VASSY experiences. Tunes to jam to and new shows! 🙂
