The Dallas Mavericks have their first ever female DJ for the team and are only the second team in the NBA to do so.

Ivy Awino, also known as Poizon Ivy, grew up being a ball kid for the Mavericks from 2003 to 2008 and could consider the American Airlines Center her home.

She worked as a street team intern for Atlantic Records when she went to Marquette University to study musical theory. During her time at college, she was close with DJ Animosity, who dropped off turntables at her house and said, “Just figure it out.”

After learning on her own, her career took off, from working at her college radio station to eventually opening for artists as big as Nas, Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B, J. Cole and Juicy J.

This isn’t her only female first position. In 2013, Poizon Ivy became the first female mixer to grace the airwaves at WKKV-FM as a V100.7 Mix Squad DJ. She is also currently the official DJ of Skylar Diggins’ Shoot 4 The Sky Basketball Camp Tour, and you can listen to her mix here:

It’s pretty exciting to see the prospect of female DJs becoming more prevalent in male-centric sports and industries. We hope to see more NBA teams and teams in other leagues following the Dallas Mavericks’ lead in the coming seasons.
