Not only did Chicago just get two new performance spaces, but every Monday night for the rest of the summer they’ll be playing water-themed movies, starting off with Sharknado and ending with Jaws.
And music? They’ve got it! Saturday July 15th, the first musical event will be taking the stage with a jazz tribute to Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie. Find out more about Lakefront Swing and other upcoming events on the Navy Pier website.
The best part? All of this will be free.
The adjacent spaces on the formerly active pier will be known as the Lake Stage and the City Stage, one a 750 capacity stage and the other 1,700.
When the spaces aren’t being used for movies, music, and performances, city-dwellers will be able to step away from the chaos of the city and enjoy the areas as quiet parks. On the lakefront side of the area, people will have an incredible view for the pier’s Wednesday and Saturday night fireworks.
The 13-acre location was funded by Chicago-based Polk Bros. Foundation, honoring the long-time furniture and electronics empire, with their largest ever gift of $20 million.
James Corner, principal in James Corner Field Operations, stated, “This was really just an underutilized open space of land, a big, open field, and yet the view is extraordinary. By tilting the land, sloping it in both directions, you get great, panoramic views of the city skyline. And then the larger portion of the lawn tilts east and overlooks the lake.”
