With the the outpouring of support and activism in music, and the tumultuous events in the LGBTQ community occurring in 2017, it’s no surprise NYC Pride had something in store for Pride Week this year.
NYC Pride, the current organizers for New York City’s LGBTQ Pride Week, announced a new component of the week titled Pride Island, a three day cultural and live music experience during the weeklong celebrations. Pride Island will occur June 23-25, on Hudson River Park’s PIER 26. Tickets went on sale Friday February 24th.
New York City Pride marches date back to 1970, as a symbolic remembrance of the Stonewall Riots a year prior. The Stonewall Riots, which were a series of spontaneous demonstrations in New York following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a local watering hole for the then-marginalized individuals in the LGBTQ community, on June 28th, 1969. The riots are considered a seminal moment in civil rights history and are considered a “coming out” moment, representing the first time people openly fought for civil rights for the LGBTQ community.
Pride Week continues to grow in size and support, and the concert series will be an addition to the extremely successful Dance on the Pier, which has previously had large surprise headliners such as Cher and Janet Jackson. The last headliner, as is tradition with the Dance on the Pier, will be announced as a surprise at a later date. With a history based on support, the new Pride Week addition seeks to celebrate differences in one another.
“While LGBT Pride at its heart is about activism and social change, we also believe that our community needs a space to celebrate who we are and what we’ve achieved, and that’s why we created Pride Island,” said organizer Jose Ramos.
