Graves – Hilo
Kanye’s old engineer just dropped a hard-hitting EP. And if you think you’re picking up a single artist, think again, collaborations with a total of nine different artists are on this six track bomb. With a good mix of electronic music, pop, R&B, and rap, you’re bound to find something you love. Personal favs: “Genesis” & “Hilo.”
At The Drive-In – in-ter a-li-a
It’s been 17 years since the last studio release, but don’t let that scare you. You’re about to fall in love all over again. The post-hardcore band brings an almost leashed chaos to every song on the album except for track #9, which is the only calmer song on the album (Ghost-Tape No. 9). Personal favs: “Holtzclaw” & “No Wolf Like The Present.”
The Afghan Whigs – In Spades
After eight full-length studio releases, they’re only getting better. With Greg Dulli’s vocals flowing over some beautiful synths and guitar, they’ve definitely got something in spades… Grab the album for the perfect mix of early ’90s and straight up alternative rock. Personal favs: “Light as a Feather” & “Arabian Heights.”
Ho99o9 – United States of Horror
Welcome to the dystopia. In their debut LP there are going to be pieces that you recognize, but maybe not all together. We’re talking rap, hardcore, electronic, punk, and experimental aspects across it all. Welcome to the United States of Horror. Personal favs: “Street Power” & “City Rejects.”
Mac Demarco – This Old Dog
In the third release from this Canadian singer/songwriter, we get 13 songs written after he moved from NY to LA. The entire album feels like a man looking at the reflection of his life in the mirror, working his way through turning into his old man, getting through a break-up, thinking about Dreams from Yesterday, and continuing anyway. Personal favs: “My Old Man” & “One Another.”
Gnarwolves – Outsiders
British skate punk… it’s a thing and you should find more of it. This album is like your favorite ’90s punk album mixed with British rock of the ’00s. Deciding which tracks on the album were my favorite was hard because I kinda loved this whole thing. It’s aggressive, it’s raw, and it’s got undeniable hooks to fall for. Personal favs: “Wires” & “Channelling Brian Molko”… and “Talking to Your Ghost.” <3
Fazerdaze – Morningside
Another full length debut album. This album is like listening in to a singer/songwriter floating through space. In the best ways, this is one of the happiest albums on the list today and just a super fun introspective dream pop journey. Personal favs: “Misread” & “Lucky Girl.”
Pond – The Weather
Australian psychedelic rockers produced by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. The seventh full-length studio album by the boys really catches them falling into their groooooove. The entire album is out there, don’t get me wrong. It’s got the psychedelic vibes down pat, but there’s something extremely relatable about it all too. It’s just a good time. Almost every song starts with something “weird” and pulls it together into a good time. Personal favs: “30000 Megatons” & “Colder Than Ice.”
