Stepping off the ferry onto Governors Island is a revelation. Who knew there was this oasis of calm in view, but well away from the cacophonous streets of New York. Now, with all the work the city has been putting into developing the parkland there, it’s quite stunning. If you haven’t been, you should definitely check it out.
Need an excuse to go? The island has been host to an increasing number of events, none more exciting than the upcoming Full Moon Music Festival. This boutique, one day music festival takes place right on the waterfront with sweeping views of the New York Harbor. Headliners include Vic Mensa, Larry Heard (aka Mr. Fingers), Kelela, DJ Harvey, and more.
Full Moon is sure to attract creatives from around New York and the world and the festival promises not only the music, but dozens of artists, performers, and culinary masters. Also, there’s going to be a mass meditation under the moon, so be ready for that…
The festival itself dates back to 1985, where in Thailand revelers would pay their respects to the full moon along a deserted beach, in between enjoying music and the company of others. The original festival remains wildly popular today, attracting over 30,000 people. The New York edition captures the original spirit of the festival with a distinctly cosmopolitan, New York spin, which has proven its mettle in the success of past editions of the event.
So grab a friend or two or three or even a special someone and take the ferry to New York’s island paradise. After all, they say “a full moon brings out the desire in us all.”
