There was a scrubby rail yard that occupied prime real estate in Los Angeles, abutting Chinatown and right across the freeway from Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine. In 2001, the state made a promise to the citizens of LA to take that abandoned rail yard and transform it into a park.
Then came 16 years of delays and construction issues (construction issues in a park, I know right?). Finally the state delivered on its promise, and the Los Angeles State Historic Park opened just this past month. If you’re into low water consumption plants and landscape architecture, you’ve probably visited.
If you’re not into those things (which means you’re probably 99.9% of the population), you probably haven’t had a reason to visit the new park yet. On Saturday May 20th, the first big event is coming to the park and it’s a BIG one. It’s Skyline: Art, Music, Food.
Presented by Radio Hill and 89.9 KCRW, the event will showcase the best electronic music today’s artists have to offer. Some of the highlights include Miike Snow, Duke Dumont, Lido, Eden, Michl, Elohim, and Jason Bentley.
Music isn’t the only reason to come to this festival. It’s in the name! Throughout the park, there will be interactive installations from a selection of LA-based artists. It’s art you can touch, which for an unsophisticated simpleton like me, is the best kind of art. I hear the artists also appeal to people who understand art…
And, of course, there’s the food. There’s a stacked lineup of craft food vendors from all over LA. Considering that LA may be the greatest, most diverse food city in the US, that’s saying something.
Okay, are you sold on going? Good. I’m going to let you in on a secret. Tickets start at $50, which is totally worth it. However, if you’re like me, and you don’t have $50 to spare, even if you wanted to, Jukely members have the opportunity to go to Skyline: Art, Music, Food as part of their membership (Disclosure: Four Over Four is published by Jukely. Duh. Look at all the side bars. And the boilerplate on all the articles).
So, I’ll see you there?
