Are you excited for Brooklyn Steel?
If you’re not, I’ll assume you haven’t heard of it yet, so it’s time to get on board now. Brooklyn Steel is set to be Brooklyn’s largest music venue when it opens this month.
The venue already made a huge splash by opening with a five night run of LCD Soundsystem shows and already their upcoming calendar features more fantastic acts such as Goldfrapp, Jamestown Revival, San Fermín and Marian Hill.
The venue name itself is derived from all the exposed steel they found in the space before renovations. When envisioning the interior, the developers wanted to preserve as much of that as possible to convey the industrial feel of a converted warehouse. All the original steel was repurposed for the bars, the windows, and even the bathrooms.
The venue has a plant-covered roof as well, which as well as being beautiful, will help absorb sound, something the venue worked with the surrounding community to implement.
The space itself is also highly modular. It features a moving stage that can make the main room a 1,200, 1,500, or 1,800 capacity venue, depending on the performer. So it’ll never feel like too cavernous or too crammed a space.
I had a chance to speak with owners Jim Glancy and John Moore, the partners in The Bowery Presents, about the venue and what they’re most excited about.
What’s your favorite feature of the new space?
All of it—because Brooklyn Steel is an old steel fabrication plant, we were able to re-purpose and utilize a lot of original material into the design of the venue. From the large fans over the main lobby bar and window frames in the restrooms, to the reclaimed metal we used to create the bars, Brooklyn Steel is a truly unique space and we’re excited for fans to check it out. And, as with all The Bowery Presents venues, our spaces have unrestricted sight lines and great acoustics.
How does Brooklyn Steel complement your other spaces around the city?
Brooklyn Steel is the largest GA room in Brooklyn and complements our other venues in the city perfectly. Up and coming bands and artists can play Rough Trade, and as they develop larger fan bases, they can play our larger capacity venues like Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Steel, and onward. We have the ability to offer artists a great place to perform at every stage of their career.
Can you tell us a bit about the community you’re moving into and what it was like working with them?
It has been great working with the local community. East Williamsburg is expanding so rapidly and is already a much different neighborhood than when we initially started discussions on the space several years ago. The Bowery Presents is dedicated to being a good neighbor; we are thrilled to be part of the fabric of the community and to have fans get to check out this great area.
Which upcoming shows are you most excited about?
We have the dream lineup for opening a venue and are thrilled with all of the shows we have booked. Of course, opening with a legendary Brooklyn band like LCD Soundsystem is incredibly exciting.
Brooklyn Steel is located at 319 Frost St, Brooklyn, NY 11222.
